In the 30+ years I’ve lived in the Dallas area, I have had the pleasure of shooting at nearly every DFW gun range. This is my list of current favorites. Comment below and let us know if you agree, or if there is another DFW gun range that deserves a spot in this list.

1. Elm Fork

Girl shooting rifle at Elm Fork Shooting Gallery - .22 rifle range
I often take my kids to shoot at Elm Fork. They especially like shooting our .22 rifles at the Shooting Gallery.

I’m going to go ahead and say it. Elm Fork is my favorite DFW Gun Range. Family-owned and operated, this outdoor gun range is a great place to bring kids who are learning to shoot. We always have a blast plinking our .22s at the vintage shooting gallery. The large open bays in the rifle and pistol range can accommodate larger groups. Three scenic courses for clay shooting add to a fun day at this range.

The owners clearly take pride in this facility, continually making improvements and adding new amenities. The Rangemaster will say something if safety is in question, but if you know what you are doing, they stay out of your way and let you plink to your heart’s content.

This scenic outdoor range feels like you’re in the country, yet it’s still in Dallas. Several events are held every month, so check the calendar if you’re going on the weekend to avoid a long wait.

2. DFW Gun Range and Academy

Bay 1 at DFW Gun Range

DFW Gun Range is a classic installation on Mockingbird, one of the closest gun ranges to downtown Dallas. I have spent many hours training at this indoor range and it remains one of my favorite places to shoot. They welcome most caliber weapons including rifles.

This facility goes out of their way to cater to female shooters including an extensive list of training classes and every Tuesday is ladies’ night. In fact, at one time, DFW Gun Range was named “The Best Place To Have A Bachelorette Party in Dallas” by the Dallas Observer.

For a unique date night or group of friends try the DFW Gun Ranger Experiences. After an instructor takes you through a brief class covering safety, ammo, proper grip, stance, etc. you get the chance to shoot five rounds through each of five guns. Be sure to call ahead to make sure they are still offering these experiences.

Tip: Get there early to check out the Gatling Gun displayed in their pro shop.

3. Frisco Gun Club

Frisco Gun Club Building
Shooting bay at Frisco Gun Club

This upscale gun range is located just north of Dallas in Frisco. Despite the sophisticated private gun club feel, Frisco Gun Club is open to the public. In addition to 40 indoor shooting lanes, this large facility has a sizable retail facility, a nice selection of firearms available to rent, training classes, and a café. Although public, memberships grant access to the members-only VIP lounge and restaurant, priority lane reservations, plus retail and class discounts.

As a non-member, I still think the atmosphere makes Frisco Gun Club an impressive date night destination or one-of-a-kind experience for clients and business associates.

The spacious retail area is uncluttered and organized, but is almost a little too well-staffed as different staff members approached me as soon as I entered every section. While I appreciate their attempt to add value, I prefer to peruse in peace.

Overall, the environment is welcoming and there are plenty of comfortable spaces to hang out before or after shooting. I don’t make it to this DFW gun range often enough but when I do, I always appreciate the experience.

4. Texas Gun Experience

Bay at Texas Gun Experience

The veteran-owned, family-run Texas Gun Experience delivers an elevated experience to shooters of all kinds. The abundance of helpful staff members is impressive and shooters of all experiences will feel welcome here.

The brothers that own TGE know how to have fun. You will flip the giggle switch shooting a variety of machine guns at this newer gun range near Dallas. Themed packages are available (think WWII or Stealth) or you can choose for yourself from a large variety of options. You can even shoot a Minigun or a Gatling gun!

At the same time, this duo also knows what’s important which is reflected in their training programs.  Many offerings go beyond the basics, like their class that focuses on home defense.

This public range also offers memberships with benefits ranging from unlimited shooting, reservations, and member’s only range time to private VIP lanes and access to the VIP lounge and patio. I’m not a member but all of the public amenities are top-notch and this range has quickly become one of my favorite places to shoot.

5. Range USA (formerly Shoot Point Blank)

Range USA Building Sign

This gun range has 3 locations across the DFW area. I’ve visited the Arlington and Lewisville locations and found both to be clean and well-lit.

Range USA is a favorite because they are one of the more affordable shooting ranges in DFW. They have specials each weekday and also offer reasonably priced memberships that include unlimited shooting, firearm rentals, special events, classes, discounts, and range reservations. Military and first responder discounts make this DFW gun range even more inexpensive.

The friendly staff members make this place very welcoming to new shooters. The only downside is that they don’t have a distance range so this is where I go when I want to focus my training on close-range pistol shooting. I often take my team shooting here and they are able to accommodate larger groups.

6. Eagle Gun Range

James and daughter shoot at Eagle Gun Range
I often take my kids shooting at Eagle Gun Range when the weather is bad and we can't make it to an outdoor range.

This clean, well-lit indoor gun range caters to experienced shooters who want to efficiently train. The seasoned staff at Eagle Gun Range is hands-off, giving you the freedom to train without the frequent check-ins and interruptions I have experienced at other ranges.

Although they boast 200 firearms for rent, the variety seems small. Two locations in Lewisville and Farmers Branch boast lanes rented by the hour or the day.

When we can’t get to an outdoor range, I take my kids to practice shooting at this family-friendly range. They offer a free youth safety course and even have kid’s birthday party packages available. Expect to wait for a lane on busier weekend days.

7. Dallas Pistol Club

Shooting Practice at Dallas Pistol Club

Although I am not a member, I have had the privilege of being a guest at this private outdoor shooting club many times over the years. Although Dallas Pistol Club is private, it is the opposite of pretentious. While experienced shooters will be able to get in some serious plinking here, new shooters will feel welcome. This is a great place for kids to learn and improve their skills.

For frequent shooters, the cost of membership may be well worth the expense. Fair warning, there is a waitlist for new membership, and for good reason. This Carrollton shooting range gives you the freedom to dictate your own range experience. You can set up a course to train on various scenarios, set up steel targets to test your long-range capabilities, or just practice drawing from a holster, all from your own private shooting bay. A comfortable air-conditioned clubhouse provides a place to relax after range time.

You don’t have to be a member to experience this great facility for yourself. On many weekends, they host public competition matches for shooters of all skill levels and welcome non-members at many of these events.

8. Dallas Gun Club

Elevated view of Dallas Gun Club

Early in our marriage, my wife and I were searching for a place to shoot. It was Labor Day and all of our usual haunts were closed. We arrived at the secluded Dallas Gun Club and were disappointed to learn that it was not open to the public. Although this is an exclusive private club, we were impressed by how welcoming and nice the staff was, even though it was clear this young couple probably didn’t have the means to become members.

Set on 600 acres just north of Dallas, this facility offers Sporting Clays, Skeet, Trap, Helice (ZZ Bird), Bunker Trap, the Grid, Five Stand and Powder Pigeon (360° Trap), as well as Rifle and Pistol shooting. A full calendar boasts regular events like tournaments, training, social events, and “fun shoots”. A beautiful clubhouse with locker rooms, a restaurant, and a bar offers a comfortable place to relax after a round of shooting.

Since our accidental visit many years ago, we have often considered joining. Perhaps now is the time to take the plunge.

9. 407 Gun Club

407 Club Lounge Area

Although I’ve never shot here, I have toured it with my family and the space is impressive and unique.

The 100-yard lanes have a bullseye target system and can be used to dial in night vision gear. Every lane is housed in its own suite, offering complete privacy during your session. The only person who can enter your suite is the RSO for safety reasons.

A cozy, welcoming space invites members to lounge and visit with fellow members and the knowledgeable instructors and staff that are on-site.

Memberships are affordable and provide a generous number of guest passes to use throughout the year.

While there is no dining in the Clubhouse, a popular restaurant leases space in a separate building on the property from the club.  It’s open to the public but convenient for members to dine before or after shooting at the club.
